A House Alone

COME WALK WITH ME DOWN THIS COUNTRY LANE
WE'LL FOLLOW A FORGOTTEN PATH I SEE
WHERE IT WILL LEAD WE'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT
SO, COME ALONG ON THIS JOURNEY WITH ME.

IT IS EVENING AND THE RED BIRDS ARE FLITTING
THEY LOVE TO EAT AT THIS TIME YOU KNOW
AND THE WILDFLOWERS CAN BE SEEN
AND THE CRITTERS RUNNING TO AND FRO.

WAIT, I SEE THE TOP OF A HOUSE IN SIGHT
WE'LL COME IN FULL VIEW OF IT SOON
WHAT A SAD PICTURE THIS HOUSE PAINTS
WOULD BE EERIE BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON.

LET'S GET CLOSER AND REST AWHILE
THE PORCH IS BIG AND LOOKS SO FORLORN
NO LAUGHTER, NO SINGING, JUST DUST
I'M SURE IT WAS HERE BEFORE I WAS BORN.

LET'S WAIVE TO THE LITTLE GIRL STANDING THERE
SO SOLEMN NOT A GESTURE OR A SMILE
AND LOOK IN THE WINDOW ABOVE HER THERE
LET'S STOP, WE'VE WALKED A COUNTRY MILE.

I LIFT MY HAND TO SAY HELLO AS I NEAR HER
TELLING HER WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DRESS SHE WEARS
SHE DOES NOT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND AT ALL
MERCY! FROM HER EYES I GLIMPSE SOME TEARS.

I REACHED OUT TO HER JUST TO TOUCH HER HAND
BUT NOTHING AT ALL DID I FIND ON THAT SPOT
NO LITTLE GIRL WAS THERE SHE WAS GONE
WAS I DREAMING, DID I SEE THIS CHILD OR NOT?

I GLANCED UPWARD TO THE WINDOW AND THEN
THE MOTHER FIGURE WAS GONE, WINDOW SO BARE
ALL OF A SUDDEN THE HOUSE WAS ALONE
I STOOD NO KNOWING WHAT OR WHO WAS THERE.

TIME HAD FLOWN AND THE SUN WAS GOING DOWN
BATS WERE FLYING OVERHEAD FROM THE ROOF
MY EVENING WALK WHAT HAD I FOUND
I CAME, I SAW, BUT HAD NO PROOF.

STANDING THERE I WAS ALONE AS THE HOUSE
MY THOUGHTS RACED BACK TO ANOTHER TIME
WHEN LAUGHTER ABOUNDED THIS PLACE
CHILDREN PLAYED, OLD FOLKS RESTED...SUBLIME.

LET'S TURN AND WALK BACK THE WAY WE CAME
LEAVING BEHIND THE HOUSE AND ITS SECRETS
A CAST-AWAY, FORGOTTEN, LOST AND ALONE
TIME PASSES, BUT ONE NEVER FORGETS.
